Although I love photography, computer programming is how I earn a
living. As such, I wrote a powerful and accurate program to be used by those
interested in my other hobby, home theater. Below is a screenshot of my shareware program called Amplify.
I wrote
this program to help understand the limitations of my audio system. I am sure
you'll find it useful too.
Amplify is a program that will estimate the loudness of a stereo or home theater system. Loudness is measured
in decibels (dB) and is referred to as sound pressure level
(SPL).
Program features:
- Calculates SPL, power consumption, clipping level, and other details related to
specific audio system setups.
- Compatible with the following types of systems: mono, stereo, 3-channel front stage,
3-channel surround, 4-channel surround, 5-channel surround, 6-channel surround,
and 7-channel surround.
- Allows entering amplifier power rating, speaker distance, speaker sensitivity,
speaker power handling, channel trim levels, and source signal levels for each audio
channel.
- Includes ability to calculate SPL loss that occurs because of the distance between
the speaker and the listener as well as attempts to compensate for room acoustics.
- Displays power usage in units of measure from picowatts up to megawatts as well
as in percentage of available power.
- Notifies when amplifier channel clipping were to likely occur as well as when power
compression might happen with the speaker(s).
